The interdisciplinary field of materials science, also commonly termed materials science and engineering, involves the discovery and design of new materials, with an emphasis on solids.
Materials Science and Engineering investigates several types of materials, such as metals, ceramics, electronic materials, and biological materials, from a single viewpoint that examines the connections between the material’s structures and the processing, properties, and overall performance.
A whole host of challenges that humans currently face are due to the limits of available materials, making this a key field likely to affect the future significantly.
The Materials Science and Engineering department at the UConn College of Engineering is among the top 25 public programs in the country, and the highest rated Engineering graduate program at UConn.
