The grid modernization initiative, aiming to create the grid of the future, is one of the largest investments and most consequential projects in the U.S. in terms of infrastructure change and public impact. It envisions a more resilient, secure, sustainable and reliable grid that allows an array of emerging services while remaining affordable to customers. As the nation accelerates into the new paradigm of the utility industry and services, a new set of interdisciplinary skills is needed for its engineering workforce.
This fully online program with synchronous and asynchronous coursework, offered by the UConn Eversource Energy Center, is designed to give utility engineers the talents needed to adapt to new technologies and to deal with the challenges of managing the increasing complexity of the grid.
Upon completion of the program in Power Grid Modernization, students will have earned an accredited graduate engineering certificate advancing their career and trained in four main areas:
- The fundamentals and practice of the physical grid as it moves from the traditional one-way flow to two-way flow between home and grid
- How the power grid data are processed for analysis and prediction
- The development of communication capabilities, moving power control systems from “islanding of automation” to totally integrated environments distribution
- High level control systems, standards and regulations, fault detection, and aggregation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to the system and necessary subjects for management systems.
All students apply and are admitted to the UConn Graduate School. Credits earned within the certificate can be applied towards a Master of Engineering (MENG). After completing the certificate program, students will have 12 graduate credits that can be applied toward a Master of Engineering degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
